CHAPTER 3 - EXCERPT

“Hey man, I told Krista Shmeckpeper that we started a band. She’s bringing a friend over in about 30 minutes to hear us play.”

Robin’s eyes bulged, and he started to panic. Krista, a petite blond with a great smile, lived just two houses down. She was one of the nicest and prettiest girls in the neighborhood. Robin and I sounded terrible, and had absolutely nothing we could play for them. This was not a good way to impress our first audience. 

Situations like this require quick thinking. A wily idea flashed across my mind…

For several hours I experienced each new keyboard in the store, totally enthralled – Minimoog, Polymoog, Arp String Ensemble, Arp Omni, Arp 2600, Fender Rhodes, and assorted Roland synths. Who needed high school when I could engage in this kind of real world, Rock World education? 

Looking back, I can’t imagine why the store manager and salesmen allowed two fourteen-year old boys to spend hours playing on the store’s brand new instruments, instruments that were worth hundreds or even thousands of dollars each. But I am so grateful that they did. 

Those hours I spent at Rock World began to forge an identity. Experimenting with instruments which I had no way to afford, fueled my nascent creativity. My mind was being wired for music and technology, sounds and gear, in a way that would ultimately manifest in my career as a composer for media…
