CHAPTER 12 - EXCERPT

By 2014, DOTA 2 had become a video gaming juggernaut, approaching eight million monthly players. Mike proposed that I compose an all-new music score for DOTA 2, a musical reskin to be included in a bundle of game upgrades and add-ons for the player community. Called the Battle Pass, Valve would sell this bundle as a way to fund a generous prize pool for the upcoming TI4 International tournament. The tournament would decide the top DOTA 2 team in all the world.

This sounded like a deliriously exciting opportunity.

My imagination was running wild, envisioning a glorious collision of high fantasy game music and Monday Night Football. I wanted screaming trumpet riffs and epic choral chanting, bristling synth lines, and a full live orchestra…
