Left Behind

CHAPTER 5 - TEXT EXCERPT

The session was droning on and on and we did not have anything keepable yet. I was running out of advice to offer and adjectives to suggest. We took a brief recess, and I consulted with the engineer and the marketing director, who had come along to the session. Everyone was drawing a blank. Tata was gracious and eager to please, but just was not getting it.

When we came back after the break I said, “Tata, I’d like for you to close your eyes and just listen to the playback of the track one more time. Clear your mind of everything we’ve done up to this point, and just think about the words of the song. Then let’s do a take of you singing whatever you’re genuinely feeling at that point.”

Tata did close her eyes, and as the music washed over her, a different countenance began to glow from her face. When we started over and recorded her singing, she sang the entire song in one take, one glorious take, with a chilling passion that sent shivers through our souls. Nothing like this had come out of her all evening, and suddenly it was perfect. And I mean PERFECT. There was nothing we replaced or edited from that final take.

What made the difference? I don’t even know. But at some point, great artists find a voice, they discover a through-thread and bring art to thrilling life...
