CHAPTER 14 - EXCERPT

I turned to Or and thanked him. Then glancing around the control room, I added, “I don’t care where the good ideas come from. The important thing is to grab them, and get them into our score.” I gave Or’s suggestion to the flute players, and within just a couple of takes, they delivered the flavor I was searching for.  

As a composer, you do not have to have all the good ideas. But you must have the good judgment to recognize good ideas and capture them. Your client is hiring you to produce a great sounding score, no matter how you get there. That was a potent lesson for us all that day...

CHAPTER 14 - EXCERPT 

As I immersed myself in this fantastical world, inspiration came for a dark, martial theme, marching forward on relentless marcato strings and heavy percussion. Contrabass choir samples and gritty brass stabs reinforced the oppressive march, interspersed with brush strokes of fantasy colors from a soprano chorus, first and second violins, and high woodwinds. For a completely synthetic rendering of an orchestral/choral composition, the final result was compelling.   

The game was a surprise success, and Ubisoft authorized a more robust sequel...
