CHAPTER 12 - EXCERPT

Itching with anticipation, I wondered what musical style would most light a fire for the players. I downloaded and played the game, visited forums, watched gameplay videos, and listened repeatedly to Tim Larkin’s original score. Tim had crafted a hybrid middle-Eastern, contemporary western orchestral score, with lots of Duduk and ethnic percussion. I wanted to keep a contemporary flair, but decided to take the score in a bold new direction.  

My imagination was running wild, envisioning a glorious collision of high fantasy game music and Monday Night Football. I wanted screaming trumpet riffs and epic choral chanting, bristling synth lines and a full live orchestra...

One of my favorite things about collaborating is the surprise and delight that occur when you stumble upon something truly magical. When Jenny’s new harmonies started floating into the score – playing off her original solo vocal, drifting through the guitar moans and creaking percussion parts – it was absolutely spine-tingling. I never imagined that effect while I was composing the score. It took another creative talent to bring that extra tingle to the party...
